Considering exhibitions

In thinking about a potential exhibition for this work, I am having to be theoretical as I am unable to mount a physical exhibition within the time-frame of this module.

“HOME” Project by Magnum Photographers

Having explored some of the ideas in Bachelard’s book, I began a new search for photographers who explore the idea of home. A little tricky, as ‘home’ is a frequently used technical term on internet sites. One project I was able to find that is of great interest is Magnum’s recent collaboration with Fujifilm under the theme of ‘home’.

Home, space, memory and intimacy.

My current project aims to capture emotions and experiences connected to home, specifically my own home. By focussing on my own home, I believe I am better able to create images with more depth than in the previous module. To do this, I need to use my instincts when photographing in the home (my tutor continues to praise more instinctive work than carefully thought through) but also consider some theories about the home in order to solidify the work’s place in the wider world.

Considering Publications

One activity that has been suggested to us for this module is to create a photobook. Having read about some ideas behind photobook creation, I decided to follow Jan Colberg’s advice (from Understanding Photobooks, 2017) and consider 3 main aspects of the process: concept, audience, form.

Spotlight on… Rinko Kawauchi

Rinko Kawauchi’s work has been influential in the initial dreamy phase of the new direction my project has taken (exploring my own home and the emotional connections I have with it).

Intimacy as protection?

Q: Have I subconsciously chosen more intimate photography because it provides more protection?

Recent images

I’ve now finished my work in my home, and am away from home for a while. In a way this is good as it gives me time to reflect on the images I have and work hard to edit them into a final Work in Progress selection.

Exhibition: Dorothea Lange and Vanessa Winship

I was able to visit the excellent Dorothea Lange and Vanessa Winship exhibition at the Barbican this week. This was a really useful visit as both these photographers work in black and white and as a large amount of my current project work is in black and white I was able to take a lot away from the exhibition.
