Exhibition and private view

The exhibition for Homelight took place from 19-21 July 2019. It was held at Old Brompton Gallery, in London.

A hugely important influence both on the project as it developed and on my decision-making in terms of the exhibition was an exhibition I visited in February. Though I wrote about many of the works I found there in my project proposal, I did not write a blog post about it at the time. I feel it has been so influential it deserves a post about it.

Editing and hanging the work

Now that I have the frames chosen, and have explored the space of the gallery virtually in terms of how to organise the exhibition, I have been considering carefully exactly what edit of all the images we made to display and how to hang the work.

Mounting the images

Once I had developed the Homelight images and dried them, they remained quite curled. It took a bit of experimentation to work out the best way to dry them as flat as possible.

Buying frames and mounts

After considering a number of framing options and deciding which type of frame to go with, as discussed in two previous blog posts, I have decided to use custom made frames from an online company. I have received examples of them (as I looked at in the decision blog post) and am certain they are the best choice for this series.

I have thought of a number of ways to hang the work, and will present them at a group critique with Gary soon.

Frame hunt

I have chosen my gallery for the Homelight exhibition, and I now need to decide on and order frames. I am aware that I have a lot of images to frame and display.

After considering a number of gallery options, I have decided to hire Old Brompton Gallery for my exhibition in July. This decision is based on a number of factors relating to both the success of the exhibition and my own experience of exhibiting.

Now that I have potential galleries lined up, I’ve been thinking more about how I wish to display the work in a gallery setting.

Bernard Testemale’s Wet Plate Collodion Images

Bernard Testemale’s series of surfers, motorbikes and vintage cars in Hawaii took me by surprise.  I did not know it was on, I just happened to see posters for it in a town I often visit in the summer with family.
