William Henry Fox Talbot

One of the major influences on the Homelight project has been William Henry Fox Talbot. I would like to discuss a few key aspects in relation to him.

Photographing home

In his book, Approaching Photography, Paul Hill makes some interesting points in regard to domestic photography, including why it is not as prevalent as other genres, and the print as an object.

New Southern Photography

A hugely important influence both on the project as it developed and on my decision-making in terms of the exhibition was an exhibition I visited in February. Though I wrote about many of the works I found there in my project proposal, I did not write a blog post about it at the time. I feel it has been so influential it deserves a post about it.

The Domestic Space Reader

Another work that influenced me while working on Homelight is The Domestic Reader, ed. Chiara Briganti and Kathy Mezei. In particular, the chapter by Mary Douglas titled “The Idea of a Home: A Kind of Space.”

Francesco Capponi

I found the work of Francesco Capponi in a book about experimental photography. What really interested me in his work is how he adapts objects to become single-use pinhole cameras. This is similar to David Emmitt Adams and his work with oil drums, but done on a much smaller scale.

Home by Nicholas Nixon

I bought this portfolio book a few months ago after randomly coming across it whilst searching for works about homes. It is difficult to find much information about this short series by photographer Nicholas Nixon on the internet.

Chiaroscuro contextualisation

My Homelight work involves a strong use of contrast, partly dictated by the medium I use but also by the shots I choose to take. I tend to work as a hunter in homes looking for scenes, objects and, most importantly, light.
